We’re Glad You’re Considering a Visit!
Visiting a new congregation can come with a lot of questions: Where do I go? What should I wear? Will I know what to do? Will I feel welcome?
At Congregation Beth Shalom, we want your first visit to feel easy.
Whether you are looking for a Jewish community, new to the Indianapolis area, visiting with family or friends, exploring Judaism, or simply curious about Beth Shalom, you are welcome here.
You do not need to know Hebrew, know the prayers, dress a certain way, or already understand how everything works. Come as you are. We will be glad to see you.
Finding Beth Shalom
One thing that can be a little confusing on your first visit: Congregation Beth Shalom shares our synagogue building with Shaarey Tefillah.
That means you may see the Shaarey Tefillah name on the building, signage, or other materials when you arrive. You are still in the right place.
Our two congregations share a physical home while remaining distinct Jewish communities, each with its own services, programs, leadership, and traditions.
When you come for a Beth Shalom service or event, look for CBS signage and information, and please feel free to ask someone if you are unsure where to go. We are happy to help.
What Should I Wear?
There is no special dress code for attending Beth Shalom.
For Shabbat services and holidays, you will see everything from casual clothing to something a little dressier. Wear what helps you feel comfortable and present.
You do not need to own or bring any ritual items in order to participate.
What Happens During a Service?
Our services combine prayer, music, reflection, learning, and time together as a community.
Some prayers are in Hebrew and some are in English. You are welcome to participate as much or as little as feels comfortable. You can sing along, follow the readings, listen, or simply take in the experience.
No one expects a visitor to know what comes next.
If people stand, sit, bow, or move at different moments and you are not sure what to do, it is perfectly fine to watch what others are doing—or simply remain comfortable where you are.
Bringing Children
Children are part of our community, and families are welcome at Beth Shalom.
We understand that children wiggle, ask questions, need breaks, and sometimes experience worship differently from adults. Please do not worry about your family having to be perfectly quiet or still in order to belong.
Some services and events are especially designed with children and families in mind, while others welcome people of all ages together.
Accessibility
We want Beth Shalom to be a community in which people can participate as fully as possible.
If you have an accessibility need or would benefit from an accommodation when attending a service, class, program, or event, please contact us before your visit. We will do our best to help make your experience comfortable and welcoming.
Security
The safety of everyone who enters our shared synagogue building is important to us.
Depending on the service or event, you may find that the exterior doors are locked for security. If so, someone will come to open the door for you when you arrive. You may also see a Carmel Police Officer stationed outside during services or events. These measures are in place to help protect our community and our guests.
If you are visiting for the first time, letting us know you are coming can help us welcome you when you arrive.

You do not have to become a member before attending. You do not have to know exactly what you are looking for. And you do not have to arrive already knowing anyone.
Sometimes the best way to get to know a community is simply to walk through the door.
