Repair the World / Tikkun Olam

Caring for One Another. Repairing Our World.

At Congregation Beth Shalom, caring for others and working toward a more just and compassionate world are essential expressions of Jewish life. Through acts of kindness, service, advocacy, and mutual support, we put our values into action—both within our congregation and in the wider community.

Whether caring for a neighbor within our congregation or working alongside others in the broader community, these efforts reflect a shared commitment: to turn Jewish values into acts of care, connection, and responsibility.

Caring Community Circle

Our Caring Community Circle is an integral part of congregational life at CBS. It is activated when a congregant or family experiences a crisis, such as a death, a serious illness or, in some instances, when there is a special occasion, such as a birth or adoption.

Current initiatives include coordinating efforts to support those who are ill, and sending cards for those in need or those who experience a loss. Helpers sign up to assist with tasks of interest to them.

Please take a moment and imagine how you could help a fellow congregant in a time of crisis. At a time of need, remember that we are God’s hands and God’s heart.

Social Action Committee

The CBS Social Action Committee supports our community by sponsoring and assisting with programs to help families and individuals in need. It also promotes social justice by incorporating Tikkun Olam into all congregational activities. Our committee readily welcomes the involvement of members of our congregation at large, Brotherhood, Sisterhood, and our youth, to accomplish our mission. This includes both financial support and “sweat equity.”

Current priorities include but are not limited to support of Popsie’s Pantry, Washington Township School students, domestic violence shelters, Holy Family Shelter, Eastside Sertoma Club, and Hooverwood Living.

We also partner with the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis, the Jewish Community Relations Council, and other organizations throughout the year to support their varied community efforts.

We have a standing volunteer commitment to prepare dinner for the residents at Holy Family Shelter every third Sunday of the month. Volunteers prepare a simple, pre-planned meal, serve residents in a ‘to-go’ style, and clean up, all from 3:30–5:30 PM. This is an easy yet deeply impactful way to serve the community.
