The CBS Social Action Committee supports our community by sponsoring and assisting with programs to help families and individuals in need. It also promotes social justice by incorporating Tikkun Olam into all congregational activities. Our committee readily welcomes the involvement of members of our congregation at large, Brotherhood, Sisterhood, and our youth, to accomplish our mission. This includes both financial support and “sweat equity.”
Current priorities include but are not limited to support of Popsie’s Pantry, Washington Township School students, domestic violence shelters, Family Promise (IHN) homeless network, and Gleaner’s Food Bank.
We also partner with the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis, the Jewish Community Relations Council, and other organizations throughout the year to support their varied community efforts.
Gleaners Food Bank
Gleaners’ mission is to lead the fight against hunger in central and southeast Indiana by collecting, storing, and distributing food to those in need. Gleaners distributes food to hungry Hoosiers through a network of more than 230 partner agencies, including emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters.
Every year thousands of Hoosier families have food to eat because of gracious and compassionate volunteers. Because of their generously given time and effort, they can collect and distribute more than 2 million pounds of food each month.
CBS volunteers at Gleaners 3-4 times yearly.
Popsie’s Pantry
Popsie’s Pantry provides dry and canned goods and fresh produce, along with household items and toiletries, to both Jewish and non-Jewish individuals who qualify for food assistance and/or require kosher food in Marion County. This is a vital program serving the most vulnerable populations in the greater Indianapolis area.
CBS has partnered with Popsie’s Pantry by conducting food collections during the High Holidays and Passover.
