What is the Torah, anyway? And what do we mean by “the Bible”? (The Jewish Bible? The Hebrew Bible? The Tanakh? The “Old Testament?”) How does our understanding of the Bible differ from other ideas. Christianity’s? other movements within Judaism? How does our understanding of modernity and our sense of self as modern Jews affect our understanding of sacred scripture? What is the Documentary Hypothesis, and what does it mean for us?

- P: The Priestly caste, clans within it, and their contributions. Numbers, Aaron and Miriam: How come Miriam has to be punished but not Aaron?
- D: The Deuteronomist, and the Deuteronomistic History in the Bible. Josiah, Jeremiah, and Baruch
- Putting it all together, then and now. Ezra and Nehemiah, returning from exile; how should we put it all together now we’ve taken it apart?
